What are miR-eQTLs?
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are approximately 22-nucleotide, small non-coding RNAs, which have been shown to regulate gene expression and cell development by binding to complementary regions of messenger transcripts. miRNA expression quantitative trait loci (miR-eQTL) analysis identifies genetic variants that affect miRNA expression: miRNA-genetic variant pairs. Identification of the genome-wide miR-eQTLs has proven to be a powerful and useful tool in the understanding of disease pathogenesis in human and other species.
miR-eQTLs are classified into two sub-groups: cis-miR-eQTLs and trans-miR-eQTLs. cis-miR-eQTLs refer to genetic variants that affect the expression of a local miRNA (i.e. the SNP is within 1 Mb from the miRNA transcript), while trans-eQTLs are genetic variants that affect the expression of a distant miRNA, often on different chromosomes.
